ATLANTA (WAOK/AP)-A Union City mother broke down in tears late Wednesday night after hearing the news that a Fulton County grand jury decided not to indict a police officer in the shooting of her son last December. 19 yr old Ariston Waiters, was shot and killed after an altercation with Officer Luther Lewis on Dec. 14.
Police have said Waiters was shot after a struggle for the officer’s weapon. Waiters’ relatives dispute the account. An autopsy showed Waiters died of two gunshots to the back.
After the ruling last night Attorney Mawuli Davis said the fight for justice in this case is not over.
Union City police said Waiters was fighting with Lewis, trying to take his gun, when he was shot and killed. The GBI investigated the case and turned its findings over to the Fulton County district attorney’s Public Integrity Unit in January. Attorney Davis says the family is planning a community rally today in honor of Waiters at Sankofa United Church of Christ in Atlanta.
