Jamie Hood, accused of gunning down an Athens-Clarke police officer earlier this year, tried unsuccessfully Thursday to have his public defenders removed from his case, arguing they are not on “the same page.”

Athens-Clarke County District Attorney Ken Mauldin filed court papers in August indicating his office would seek the death penalty against Hood, 33, who is accused of fatally shooting Senior Police Office Elmer “Buddy” Christian on March 22.
Authorities say Hood, who faces multiple counts, first shot Senior Police Officer Tony Howard in the face after he stopped an SUV to question a suspect in a carjacking and kidnapping. Hood then fatally shot Christian, who had arrived at the scene. Hood has pleaded not guilty.
At his first-appearance hearing Thursday, Hood told Stephens that his public defenders seemed more interested in “investigating me and my family,” according to the Banner-Herald report.
“I don’t trust these people with my life,” Hood said of his attorneys.
Hood also predicted, “At the end of the day, I’m going to suffer the consequences.” It wasn’t clear, however, whether he was referring the direction of his defense or the outcome of the charges against him.
Hood also challenged the judge when Stephens said his attorneys were both qualified to handle the case. Hood said Stephens couldn’t “force these folks” on him, but the judge was unmoved in denying his request, according to the Banner-Herald.
